  • It is storming outside and Emerson taught me how to play dominos today.

It was pretty fun although he kicked my ass.

I also saw this prompt about small spells to do on your birthday, and half of an enormous poem formed in my head while I was taking my 30 minutes of boredom based on the suggestion to write a letter to yourself a year ago even though it isn’t my birthday. So I’m going to post it here for posterity’s sake.

    “annus epilepticus”

    you don't know this yet
but the premonitions you've been having of
    your own death are true
and a mere few weeks past your 28th birthday
you will die - just enough - to touch the
robe of any god you know
when the subtle fire you've always been
    strikes you back
    and strikes you back again

you will hang on for just long enough
for your kind partner to burst into the room
    cradle you in his arms
and guide you, screaming in mortal terror, back into the light

you have never been good at dying
but this will take you a hair’s breadth from death
and you will bear the scars on your temporal lobe
(and speech pattern) long afterwards to prove it

and whether it is by fate or some wild magic
this will save your life in more ways than you will
    know

for most of July, you will not be able to speak
coherently. you will eventually choke out
your suspicion that the seizures induced
Wernicke's aphasia, and everyone who knows
you will agree with you, a cruel fate for
you, but more importantly, you will come back…
    changed.

you will start writing better poetry. something
about the way your brain burned and cracked
will allow you to see things from a different angle,
to look askance at language in a way you
    never did before.
the partner that saved your life will convince you
to start attending a poetry workshop held in a coffeeshop that july. the rhythm of writing and
    performing regularly amongst very talented
wordsmiths will help break you out of your
    agoraphobia.
one of them will take notice of the way you
    perform, noting its similarity
to Shakespearean acting and encourage you to attend the open mic he runs.
so you start performing at Linneman's Riverwest Inn again for the first time since 2023 at his
    personal request.

you will somehow muddle through your divorce
proceedings on july 23, five years and 13 days
since leaving your ex husband, and it's a miracle
you will be able to do that since even getting
out of bed to use the bathroom still feels like running a marathon, but you're so hell-bound
and determined to get rid of this man that
when the judge asks if the marriage fell apart
due to incompatibility of temperament, you will
shout ABSOLUTELY loud and clear as day into
the microphone. (you will also show up hours
early to the hearing. you don't want to miss this
for the world.) when your ex husband replies, it's the most defeated you will ever hear him.
spite has always been your strong suit.
the judge will finalize your divorce, and
then the question arises of who you will
    marry next.

you will leave the answer up to the two people
    you consider yourself married to
already, a man who cannot lie
and a boy who cannot tell the truth.
in a rare show of generosity, the liar boy
will concede to the honest man.
he will live to regret that decision. you, however,
    will not.

as the months progress, it will become increasingly clear that despite your love
for him, your relationship with the liar is built
on sand. surviving your seizures will leave
you with a new perspective on life and
precious little patience for wasted time or
undue stress, and the liar will waste your time
    and mess with your head.
you will tell him he is killing you. he displays no
remorse. you will scream, beg, plead, and stop
short of borrowing and stealing to get him to
    listen.
despite his damn near single-minded obsession
with you that will make you feel like you're
emotionally his hostage, he will not care about
the affect he's having on your other relationships
    or your well being.

one very early fall morning, after you've spent the
entire night in the emergency room with him and
your fiancé, “heat above” by greta van fleet will
come on. your fiancé will remark that it feels as though you are driving into a different
timeline as dawn breaks. you, spiritual and full of subtle fire as ever, will respond that you feel it, too. your liar will
    say nothing.

    finally, in november, after
months of suspicion that he's cheating on you (despite being polyamorous!)
he will get sloppy and you'll catch him when he
forgets to turn his location off.
this is your red line and you will dump him over it.
to add insult to injury, he will tell you you're
    overreacting.
you will know better than that by now.

despite your heartbreak, you will feel more
free after leaving him than you have in months.
you will compile a dossier of evidence against him
and publish it to the world.
this is when the mask and gloves come off and it
    will spark
a months long battle of he-said-she said online.
he will slander both you and your future husband.
you will have even fewer regrets about leaving
    him.

one of the final acts you will do before moving
out from the apartment you and your fiancé share with your liar
is a manifestation ritual that will make you feel
powerful beyond imagining - you will gaze into
a mirror with your future husband while “heat above” plays in the background. you will picture yourself in red sunglasses driving down water street with more money and fame
    than sense, husband
next to you. you pass your former lying flame on
the street, roll down your window, wave to him like a queen, and ride on
as if he had never meant a thing to you in the
    first place.

you will choose “heat above” as the song for your
intentions for the year to come after how that ritual made you
    feel.

on January 5th, you will feature at Linneman's, your poetic home.
you will write a brilliant bespoke set for the
    occasion, combining music, poetry, and
    references to shakespeare at the
host’s request. the audience is small, but they are
so engaged that they offer you a standing ovation at the end.
you have nothing prepared for an encore, so you
will offer them a story about your eccentric
    great uncle.
it will go over the time limit, but not a soul will
    care.

you will marry your husband on January 23rd in the
same coffeeshop that helped you work through
your agoraphobia. the wedding will be incredibly
small, but it will be the finest wedding either of
you have ever attended. the poet who runs
the workshop that got you writing again will
write a special poem for the ceremony.
your friend and frequent collaborator will travel
all the way from Madison to attend. your
husband's best man will travel all the way from
iowa. your “gentleman of debauchery”, as they are called, is your dear friend who you will
    date a few months later.

you will wake up the next day in the fabulous
hotel that your best man and
a friend of yours who you met
by chance arranged for you and your husband
to find that one of the videos you posted from
the wedding is going viral on instagram.
it is your first look video, and no one, friend or foe,
will quite know what to make of it.
within days, it will amass millions of views.
    you will keep posting.

you will start to get inundated with direct messages from people who are fascinated with
your body after you get an idea to post videos of
yourself in lingerie that your husband found
for you at a clothing swap, and because you are
struggling financially, you will decide to start talking
    about your Patreon more.
to no one’s surprise but your foes, you will get
subscribers, enough to make hundreds of dollars
in the first two months you talk about it.
in the meantime, you will keep going viral.

a few weeks before your next birthday, on
    your regularly scheduled Internet travels,
you will come across a creator who found out
that she copes with mast cell activation syndrome
and that she has been taking H1 and H2 inhibitors
for it. you will tell your husband what you saw, and seeing as you've already been taking H1
inhibitors for some time, he will find you H2 inhibitors.
you will take them as an experiment, and the
difference is like night and day. you will feel as
though you are emerging from a decade in a
    long, dark cave.

    the change will frighten you.
    you will keep going anyway.

you don't know it yet, but despite everything -
you will do more than your best this year.

  • Getting Back on Track

When we were younger, mid teens or so, our family would always accuse us of having a one track mind and say that we needed to “get off the track” when we hyperfocused on something a bit too hard for their taste or comfort.

I, Allēna, am particularly bad about that. I’m very tightly wound, and I feel like a compressed coil much of the time. If something releases pressure on that coil, I might just.. Erupt and spill everywhere. I know much of that pressure is self imposed now that I’m an adult and is the result of a life filled with trauma, and as a result I am slowly but surely learning that I can learn to relax and I’ll still be safe and not everything will go to shit. I don’t have to be this poised image of perfection, and nor does everyone else. Not all the time, anyway. I view my AuDHD/CPTSD pattern recognition as both a blessing and a curse in this respect. It makes me very anxious, but I also get a lot done and a lot done in a way that gets results.

That being said, I’ve been slowly learning now that life is becoming more stable to make time for my special interests, both old and new. That hyperfocus, that “track”, if you will, is what energizes me. I can’t switch mental trains of thought or tasks easily like a neurotypical or someone who has a different “flavor” of ADHD can. However, whatever I’m doing, if I care about it and enjoy it, I give it my all. I throw my entire soul into it, and gods, does  it make me feel alive again.

    It never hasn’t..

I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to relax through my burnout like a neurotypical will. However, I do know that engaging with people and things that make me feel alive again when I’m up for the task is the closest thing I feel to R&R.

And lately, I’ve been giving an old comfort show of mine a re-watch – Heroes. It’s an odd one. I don’t know many people who have seen it at all, but many actors I love are in it, and we watched most of it with our family back in 2011-12 or so, mostly on Wednesday nights.

It has been an odd experience. Very comforting, yet I only remember about half of it. I think it’s because while I loved it, I was likely severely dissociated at the time, largely focused on other things and people, and may not have been the only headmate in front, but didn’t realize it at the moment.

I don’t know. What I do know is this – it seems to have been a huge influence on my audio drama The Third Prophecy a little over a half decade later and one of the shows that made my system realize we were plural, but we couldn’t admit that to anyone for several more years.

I’ll need to keep watching. I’ll keep y’all posted.

  • Full Circle?

Hey, everyone! Lazarus here. I’m writing this post a bit later in the day than I would like, but sometimes shit happens and I have no energy until late and I have to put my energy level and available brain cells (or lack thereof) first. That’s precisely what I ended up doing.

Today has been an odd one, especially mentally. I spent the majority of it alone as both Zelda and Emerson were away at work, which gave me plenty of time to think. Zelda sent me some money to pick up vapes for both of us since the tobacco I’ve been smoking requires me to often nearly burn my thumb to light my pipe or burn it outright, and I’m really not a fan of doing that. (Don’t get on me for smoking, it helps me get my tired ADHD brain in good working order, and I’m pretty sure my various chronic ailments will take me out before anything nicotine related will.) As I was walking to the excellent shop where my partners and I pick up most of our vapes and related paraphernalia, it felt almost like being lost in a memory. I’m not sure if it’s how I’ve been feeling lately and what I’ve been exploring of late, but it felt similar to being back in Alaska in October-November of 2019, some five years prior during my first marriage.

My marriage to my first husband, Fang, was strange in many ways. He wasn’t home often due to the fact that he poured his everything into his career as a systems administrator where he worked an hour away, and when he was home, it wasn’t pleasant. He would either spend his time deep in video games with our housemates or fighting with me to try and get me to do shit he wanted that I didn’t consent to by any stretch of the imagination.

He wanted to be far more active than my body could handle at that point and to clean up after him and the housemates simply because I didn’t work outside of the home, despite the fact that I was working two jobs at that point, just largely from home, and was very prolific creatively when I wasn’t working. I had fought my entire life for my independence and autonomy and was not having it.

We had two very different ideas of what we wanted the relationship to look like, and it turned into a protracted power struggle. So I came to relish the long stretches of time when I would be alone, as it afforded me a measure of freedom I had never gotten to have before. Before shipping off to Alaska, my mother, Hera, kept close tabs on me, even when I was away at college, and I had begun extricating myself from her that summer and was a good 4,000 miles away back in Texas.

So by October of 2019, I had a great deal more time and freedom on my hands than I had ever had before and was beginning to explore what that meant for me for the first time in my life at 22. Fang was controlling, sure, but he simply wasn’t around often enough to stop me from building a life of my own. I began doing just that that summer, and didn’t stop as autumn approached.

I had spent the last several years examining my faith, and was fairly certain by that point that I wasn’t a Christian, at least not a typical one. This deconstruction eventually led me to start exploring kitchen witchcraft and divination, and I started blending my own teas and made my own divination system that year. At that point, things like Tarot hadn’t interested me yet and wouldn’t for another several years. Many other aspects of mainstream witchcraft made me deeply uncomfortable, and I would come to find out later that many of these things were actually closed practices that belonged to cultures that I was not a part of. They were unsettling for good reason!

I was also beginning to examine my trauma in depth for the first time and come to face to face with much of the extent of what my family had done to me. It was actually what had led to me attempting to extricate myself from Hera that year. It failed when she threatened to fly up to Alaska that winter in a message to Fang, and she continued to be in league with him long after I left in 2020.

Now, however, I have far more ACTUAL freedom and am striving toward a life that actually works. My partners know it would be foolish to attempt to control me. I don’t stand for that bullshit, I made that clear to them from the jump, and disclosed my disabilities and need for a lot of rest up front, as well, so they don’t push me harder than I can handle.

I’m doing my best to not just keep Hera and the toxic people in her life that enabled her bullshit out of my life, but unfuck my own toxic bullshit as well. Trauma explains poor behavior, but doesn’t excuse it, and I don’t take bullshit from myself or anyone else, and do my utmost to take accountability when I’m in the wrong, even if the other party doesn’t mind what I did.

I do a lot of shit that I don’t like and try and do better, even if the other people around me don’t hold me to that high of a standard, weren’t harmed, what have you. If I don’t like the outcome of what happened, I learn from it and do whatever I can to grow from it. Full stop. I didn’t do that when I was 22.

Additionally, I’m still exploring my craft, just at a deeper level. Everything I do rides the line between the mundane and the magical, and if I can’t find a scientific or academic explanation for something, I turn to the metaphysical or spiritual for answers. Conversely, I like to try and find answers for what I’m exploring spiritually in science, as well. I was basically raised by scientists and doctors, but I’m also an intuitive person with a fascination for pretty much everything and hoard knowledge of any kind like a dragon.

So yeah. Here’s to the next… How long has it been? Five years? Yeah, I think it’s been five years now. Linear time has never been my strong suit, haha. Stay tuned for more magic, and I will see you beautiful people next time. Happy Halloween, Blessed Samhain, whatever y’all happen to observe 💛
