  • Today on suckerpunching our inner critic.

Your bitch applied for an artist residency to work on shit this summer.

    Why?

    Why not.

The worst they’ll do is turn me down.

At best? We get a stipend to work on cool shit like this here website and other things and we meet other artists and work with them.

    Fuck it. Let’s ride.

The fucking kicker was the bio I wrote:

Ashley Halliwell (they/any) is a 27 year old neurodivergent, disabled, and chronically ill multidisciplinary artist. Their they/them is, in fact, plural, as they discovered in their teens that they were a DID system after surviving a massive stroke in infancy. The stroke cost them roughly an eighth of their brain, most of the use of their left hand, but in return, they got synesthesia, a foul mouth, a near photographic memory, a heaping dose of stubbornness, off the charts pattern recognition and intuition, and the ability to play instruments by ear. On top of that, they deal with AuDHD, CPTSD, an as of yet undiagnosed set of chronic illnesses, and even more genetic mutations. And that was only the second time they almost died.

They often joke that whatever god(s) made them made them sick because if they were abled, they’d be too powerful.

Much of their work is wry, chock full of dark humor, inspired by their life, and as bold and colorful as they are. They’re unafraid to fail their way forward, paint everything in vivid colors, and use the strongest language you’ve ever heard.

They’re a four time published author. They released their first poetry collection The Caesura and the Silence in 2016, followed by their second poetry collection To Dance with a Cyclone in 2019, their first play script Lavender and Scissors in 2020, and their third poetry collection Singing Molten Gold To The Morning in 2021.

They’ve also produced, engineered, released, and recorded 15 albums under the name Candy For Trees, the most recent being 2023’s Hardshell. Pretty impressive for having functional use of only 1.333 hands, right?

When they aren't sleeping or eating a galaxy's worth of food, they're trolling bigots on the Internet, telling stories about their roller-coaster of a life, or working on their current project, their chaos haven/online art collective in the making, Open Sorcery, which can be found at vince.opensorceryy.co/.

We’ll see what happens. Results arrive shortly…

  • Something I’ve noticed – But WordPress.org put words to.

I’m the original host of this system and have been tinkering with web design and the internet in general since I was about 5. I’ve been running WordPress since 2008, and since about that time, I’ve noticed what this article talks about more and more frequently. Namely, homogeneity, not just in terms of WordPress blogs, but across the entire Internet.

We already run a very lean and mean version of a preexisting WordPress theme on this site, one that several of us have lovingly tweaked over several months to suit our needs and provide users with as little clutter and bullshit as possible when they land the site from the jump so that they can just dive right in.

However, my system can be described with the word weird. And while I like what Open Sorcery looks like now, as we post more, explore ourselves, I want to modify the site to reflect us more. I’m reluctant to use phrasing like “reflect our brand” or anything like that, because we don’t really sell things on here, and on the rare occasions we do hawk our wares, the “brand” and the way we live are one and the same.

Because yes, I absolutely love accessible, clean design. But the Open Sorcery site is missing the strange artistic side of our self expression, which is a huge part of the way we do things.

This will likely be rolled out over time, require iterative tweaking and experimentation, and may change a lot aesthetically. Because we don’t fit one “look” and never have. And nothing will come of this tonight because I need more rest. I just wanted to put my thoughts down on paper for y’all before I lose them.

One thing I don’t want to change, though? A clean interface, free of unnecessary bullshit visual clutter. So while it may look fucking cool and striking, I want no detail to impede the actual function of the site.

    ✨oooo shiny website✨

  • My thoughts on programming, etc..

Do I have some programming knowledge? Yes.

Could I get more? Yeah, if I wanted to and had the fucking patience, so on, and so forth.

Do I learn more when I want and need to? Absolutely.

Do I mostly just use what I have to play around and shitpost? OHHH, YEAHHH.

  • And the rabbit hole deepens…

Because I have discovered Bridgy Fed and through it, the IndieWeb. Jesus, this takes me back down memory lane to when Castor was blogging to approximately 2004ish. I kinda love it??

AuDHD brain and hypercategorization for the win.

I love breaking out of walled gardens.

  • Entropy

    Reblog via Cora Grace

    Hardware is always getting better.
Unfortunately, software is always getting worse.
and software gets worse faster than hardware gets better.

Real, though. This is why we built Open Sorcery as lean and clean as we could.

  • Mastodon Client Tomfuckery Update Part One…

So. Posting from here (Tusky) did NOT break my site. Not only THAT, but it may be more convenient for me to use this in tandem with the standard editor AND my Friends plugin on WP or like. A Web browser client. Watch this space for further attractions as I scream into the void and reblog ALL THE THINGS!! HEHE!

    Oh no. 🤣

  • A Classic Example of What Not to Do

Hello, everyone! Lazarus here. I was talking with Emerson about this web design class he was sitting in today, and we both came to the conclusion that I would be Immediately Sacked if I ever taught a web design class in real life. However, that did not stop my exceedingly sleepy brainhole from vividly imagining a darker universe in which I was, in fact, put in charge of teaching Web Design Class.

Here are a few, very imaginary scenarios of me teaching said class.

As you can see, I should never ACTUALLY teach Web Design Class. I am far too cantankerous for that. However, I found it hysterically funny to imagine these scenes.

I should probably skitter off and get some more sleep. Before I leave, however, have one more, completely unrelated scenario as a treat.

I hope y’all enjoyed my Sleepy Brainhole Fiction. Jesus indeed wept this day.

    Stay tuned for more magic!
